Following a delayed start due to their team bus braking down on the way from Torquay, we had to reduce the game to a T20. Despite fielding some former international cricketers, The Hollywood Golden Oldies struggled to mount a big score due to some excellent bowling from Sachin Bandara and Scyld Berry who bamboozled them with his beguiling spin. Our visitors from Los Angeles were still a bit jaded from the friday traffic on the M5 and only managed to muster 60 runs. The Gipsies made easy work of the chase with a classy innings by Kim Parsley followed by some big hitting from Jay Uthup. We had a good drink with our friends from across the pond and wish them well for the rest of their tour.

A fantastic fixture blessed with dry weather resulting in a close finish for the second year running - the gipsies unable to secure the last wicket in the last 3 overs (squeezed in by bowling 23 overs in the last hour) and DCC securing the draw. After losing the toss and being inserted on a "used wicket" - the first hour was a battle of survival by openers Griffiths and Lawrence. Lawrence fell in the 23rd over for a patient 19 - and the score on 68. With Gegg arriving to the crease and the introduction of the Dumbleton spinners - the game moved on at a pace to lunch at 140 for 1 wicket - Griffths 84 not out. A fantastic lunch was had and discussions on declarations inevitably were had. Griffiths and Gegg accelerated again after lunch - only for Griffiths to fall on 98 - stumped to a huge sigh by the eager crowd (including one lucky gent almost decapitated by a Griffiths six!). 170-2. What followed was somewhat of a collapse - losing 5 wickets for 16 runs - but Gegg remained steadfast. An audacious reverse sweep 6 into the pond a particular highlight. 186-6 The tail wagged enough to allow Gegg to get to his hundred and a declaration of 260-9 from 59.3 overs seemed fair with plenty of time for the young DCC side to bat. The Gipsies managed 14 overs at the DCC top order before tea - yielding a wicket for Kilminster (vs his old club) - but the dangerous Martin was allowed a life or two by some dubious catching!! 56-1 at tea What followed was a game that would not have been out of place on the sub continent - a barrage of spinners and the captain - squeezing in over after over. As we approached the final hour - DCC were 5 wickets down needing another 100 to win - very finely poised. Kilminster, Kumar and Wills - all bowled superbly. 3 great catches by Kumar, Wills and Hoskins - pushed the game into tense final few overs. With the DCC Sri Lankan pro coming in at 10 - we thought they may still go for the win, especially with time in the game - but confused with the format he blocked out an over thinking the game was all done - but we squeezed a final over at the number 11 - but alas it was not to be. DCC finished on 237-9. Kilminster an excellent 21 overs - 6 for 71 and Wills 13 overs 2-66. Amazingly the online scoring shows we bowled 59 overs in 168 mins!!! Roll on next year.

Sadly, an enjoyable day was cut short by rain shortly before tea. Our New Zealand friends Henry Cooper and Shane Burton both played starred for the Gipsies. Henry scoring a fluent 107 and Shane hitting an unbeaten 55 as the Gipsies posted 242-9. Debutant Andrew Percy claimed his first Gipsy wicket by having the Oxford Downs opener caught behind and Sachin Bandara claimed the other wicket before the weather closed in.

The Gipsies arrived at Kingsholm to kick off their Centenary cricket week with a stronger than expected team featuring 3 NZ internationals! There was a lot of nervous chatter in the Kingsholm dressing room but the nerves soon abated and at drinks The Gipsies were in disarray with all of their top 5 failing. The tail wagged a little thanks to the Sri Lankan opening bowler but still only posted a sub par 125 all out. Kingsholm's pre match nerves turned into post lunch over confidence! Kingsholm had a solid start with Uthup scoring 26 but then the Gipsies turned the screw and brought on the New Zealand international who turns out can also bowl a bit. Despite a valiant 31 by Luke Bond, Kingsholm had a familiar batting collapse and were all out for 103. We all then had a early BBQ and a fabulous quiz hosted by our illustrious Chairman Chris Coley.

Inserted on a grey morning, the Old Decanians made 69 for their first wicket despite some challenging swing bowling from Harvey Pynn (1-55) and young left armer Max Beer (0-39) on a good track, backed up well by young seamer Jay Uthup (2-32) and tight bowling from the spinners Joe Stevens (10 overs 1-29) and Benny Ellis (10 overs 4-37) restricting the hosts to 165-7 before some good hitting by Charlie Watkins who played for us in 2022 (61 n.o.) allowed a declaration on 232-9 from 51 overs. There was mainly excellent fielding and catching from our relatively youthful Gipsies side including 3 Old Decanians, notably from Matt Aldridge behind the stumps (only 1 bye from a “near wide”), Sam Porter and Dr Pynn (1-55) although the latter Old Cheltonian earned a rebuke from the umpire which the captain deemed did not quite require referral to the General Medical Council! In reply a steady opening partnership by “T” Theron (17) and Benny Ellis took us to 62-1 at tea. This was backed up by a carefully constructed 35 from second row Freddie Thomas who finally tasted victory with the Gipsies (although earlier in the year had almost beaten the European Champions away from home). Man of the match Benny Ellis made 75 then at 144-4 came a match winning partnership of 80 between Joe Stevens (71 n.o.) and Matt Aldridge (18) leaving 7 from the last over and 2 off 2 balls and we were finally nudged home in 52.5 overs by Jack Hamilton (3 n.o.) and Joe who hit a 4 off the penultimate ball to win the Gipsies the Doctor’s Cup for the first time since 2017 after close draws the last 2 years. Thanks go to Ian and Geoff Trett for umpiring and scoring and the Old Decanians and Dean Close for much hospitality and once again putting on wonderful catering before, during and after at the BBQ. The sun was shining and the match was about to begin. The Gloucester Gipsies team had a number of players who not even been to bed following the Cheltenham College Leavers Ball, including one who turned up in his dinner jacket to play. We batted like a team that had been out partying all night, except for the talented Barney Cooper who scored 67. The Gipsies were all out for 197 which was 20 runs short of the captain’s target. When Radley were 110 for 0 (needing 87 off 20 overs) the Captain’s son informed him that he “couldn’t lead a train of ducks” at which point the captaincy was passed over to the former Cheltenham College 1st XI Skipper. He led a spirited comeback for the Gipsies but unfortunately it was a little too late and Radley won by three wickets with 2 overs remaining. It was a fun day on a beautiful ground and the game was played in a great spirit. Hangovers were cured. The tuneful snoring of happy cricketers in the car on the way home was a sign of a good day.

After a sporting declaration by the Gipsies at the 40 over mark the score had reached 214-2 with a very impressive 103 (retired) by young Indian player Vedante Gadia from Old Bristolians and 49 by Andrew Uys from Stroud CC. The Gipsies took the field full of optimism knowing that Wycliffe had yet to chase down 200 all season. However, an aggressive start by the college saw them progress to 60 form the first 10 overs without loss. A fine spell by the left of wizardry of J Edgeworth (0-19 off 7)and the bustling C Collinson (1-11 off 3) got the Gipsies back into the game. The last 20 overs arrived at 5pm and the College were able to produce a well paced run chase with 2.3 overs to spare. It was a great game with everyone contributing in what was the last ever game on the Wycliffe 1st XI square as it morphs into a rugby and football home for the college and cricket being re-homed out onto the Berryfields!

On a sultry day versus a well drilled Kings Gloucester team - the result was decided by a cloud burst that flooded the square leading to the abandonment of the match! An innings held together by Matt Cayless, and highlights of two great pieces of fielding, one to remove Shaun Uthup by means of run out, and an excellent catch to remove Cayless. An excellent tea was enjoyed by all. With an initial 5 balls only bowled after tea, we managed a breakthrough to dismiss the Kings Skipper by Nabi for 0. Getting back out with Kings now chasing a reduced target of 133, Pav Sharma took another wicket but at 12-2 off 5 overs the heavens opened and the game was abandoned. The team all retired to the Pelican pub to think of what could have been if the thunderstorm had missed Archdeacon! Man of the match for Kings went to Noah Bennet for an excellent 8 overs of leg spin - 2-40.

The Gipsies were well on top when the heavens opened and no more play was possible. Batting first on a docile wicket and in sizzling heat, the Gipsies opening pair built steadily towards a formidable total. The partnership reached 214 with James France reaching his century one ball before James Richardson reached his, Both batsmen promptly retired out. Is this a record of some sort for the Gipsies? It was a pity that the rain had the last word.

Gipsies put in on a sticky deck. Reduced game to 40 over. Tight bowling up top from the school boys. Good partnership from griffiths 45 and Australian devlin webb 90 steadied the ship. Gipsies lost wickets in middle. Finished 201 - 7 off 40. Millfield hit a 6 off last ball of game to get the tie. Bowlers bowled well on the whole. Tom hage (H&R) with 2 and Harry Senior (Frocester) with 3.

The last match of the 2022 season ended in a comfortable victory for The Gipsies. Middleton Stoney chose to bat first and seemed likely to set a demanding target. However, two pieces of individual brilliance changed the course of the game. A direct hit run out by Richard Wills followed by a stunning diving catch by 17 year old, Alex Beer reined in the home side and the declaration came at 175 for 9. Richard Tilley with 2 for 14 and Alex Beer, 2 for 7 were the most successful bowlers. The Gipsies made an uncertain start to the reply but a well-judged partnership beween James France (70) and Richard Beer (38) ensured that the target was always within reach and the six wicket win was secured with 3 overs to spare.

A full house at the Ridings watched an entertaining game in glorious conditions! The Gipsies racked up 254 - Damien Bouwer stroking it to all parts making a swashbuckling 78, whilst Dev Webb, Vishal Mamgai, Ollie Louch, Rajesh Dhupar and the seasoned master gloveman John Rendell with valuable contributions. So the chase was on and The Sods opening pair Gus Thompson and Fred Febry put on 90y odd for the first wicket. Jiwantjot Singh was a joy to watch and kept the target firmly in sight, as he rushed to 50 with some extraordinary sweeps and reverse drives. The crowd by now were delirious, bamboozled by the wizardry of the man. He is now more famous in the Shire of Sodbury than JK Rowling, who was born down the road in Yate. When Kapil Dev Webb removed Jiwanjot, the Gipsies smelt an opportunity. The Big Aussie charging up the hill, was Merv-esque as he dismissed the elegant Bonguard and hard-hitting Poole cheaply. Always a highlight of the fixture calendar a group of Gipsies valiantly battled for a draw after losing the toss on an excellent wicket. Chasing down 274 with all 3 results possible on the final ball, a leg side delivery prevented the gipsies completing a memorable win. Thank you to DCC for their excellent hospitality and a very high quality match played in a great spirit.

On a beautiful day next to the boat clubs on the river Thames, GG won the toss and batted. Having begun with an opening partnership of 52 off 9 overs, GG quickly slumped to 82 for 5 off 16 overs. Dev Webb scored a stylish 36. We then recovered with a partnership of 94 between Henry Cooper who scored an elegant 111 and Robin Churchman (41). GG ended up all out for 248 (52 overs) and on an excellent wicket a very fast outfield GG were probably 20 runs short. Having put on 96 for the 1st wicket and a further 68 for the 2nd wicket, SOA were always in the driving seat. M. Young who opened scored an excellent 98. Despite the valiant efforts of Paul Lazenbury (2-37 in 7 overs) and Henry Cooper (1 -62 in 9 overs), M Warner guided SOA to victory (46 no) with 9 balls remaining. A lovely ground, superb lunch & tea, this was an excellent days cricket enjoyed by all who attended.

On a beautiful sunny day at Stowell Park we had a really great time with young wandering team, Twigworth Travellers. On their first visit to Stowell I think they were overawed with the occasion and dropped a lot of catches which could have changed the course of the game. Luke Bond scored his maiden century to help the Gipsies to 305 declared (with 50s from Matt Cayless and Alex Antoine). Despite me bowling myself to try and make a game of it, this proved too high a run chase and The Gipsies bowled them out for 185 (with wickets for Mark Chicken, Matt Finlay and Alex Antoine). A memorable day with a fantastic lunch and tea by new caterers Claire Booth.

A cracking 40 over a side match played in great spirit from both sides settled in the last over!!. An excellent century by Devlin Webb set KGS a stiff target, but a measured unbeaten century by Josh Gordon (helped by some generous fielding) - got KGS over the line by 5 wickets with 3 balls spare. An enjoyable match, played on a great venue (first time square turned round) in glorious sunshine topped off by beers in the best pub in Gloucester - The Pelican!!

On an overcast start, the weather reflected the heads of 11 people playing on both sides who were involved in the Gipsies v Cheltenham the day before! Gipsies won the toss and batted. Gus Carini-Roberts batted well for his 28 before being deceived by the off spinner and caught and bowled. On a low and slow wicket the Gipsies struggled with Steve Jones a gutsy 19, Jamie Diamond (playing against his former club) a flamboyant 25 and Harry Dawson (recovering from the night before ) with a well executed 32. However, the Gipsies reached 217 off their 40 overs on the back of a patient 62 not out from Paul Lazenbury where thankfully there were more boundaries than singles! Bredon got off to a fast start and were 36 in the 9th over when Ollie McGrath who scored 29 was caught at square leg off George Gallagher. Joe Tagg started slowly and batted very well for his 56 off 61 balls to win man of the match for Bredon. He was supported by Dom Fenny 33 and his cousin Tim then batted very well for 51. With the scored on 203 for 4 (15 needed to win with 3 overs and 6 wickets remaining) the game turned. Paul Lazenbury got 3 for 1 run in his 2nd last over although he did bowl one towards the leg side which went for 4 leg byes. With Bredon needing 10 off 2 overs, John Belfield who at 83 years young and bowled 3 overs 1-27 was replaced by Jamie Diamond. He got 1 for 3 in his only over which left Bredon needing 7 off the last over and now only 2 wickets remaining. With 6 needed off 4 balls, Paul Lazenbury got the remaining two wickets in 2 balls to win a trilling game for the Gipsies. He finished with 5 for 25 off 5.4 overs. A presentation before the game was made to the Fenny family ( 5 children and grandchildren playing) for the donation of the live screening equipment so we can watch all games at Bredon on play cricket wherever we are in the world. It was a game played with a smile on everyone’s face and a truly special reminder of how cricket should be played to commemorate GG’s 100 years.

Gipsies win by 38 runs. (Honours Board at the end) A beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon at Ashfold School. Perfect conditions for a feast of cricket! The Gipsies arrived with a rather strong side bolstered by a few "quite handy" guests from Great Rissington. The Gipises won a "not at all manufactured" toss and elected to bat in a 35 overs contest. After a steady start... a very steady start... courtesy of Jones and Singh... the first wicket fell with Singh not quite scampering home for a chancy second run. Enter George "quite handy" Garratt for a swift 52 to get the run rate back on target. With another swift and effortless 50 from Mitch "quite handy" Thomas all the way from Melbourne and just "handy" contributions from a few others we set a challenging - we thought - target of 227 to win. The Gipsies opened their bowling attack with 130-ish years of experience (nod to Bennett and Bayliss)! In spite of a couple of early wickets Gravediggers set out with an attacking intent and first Aubrey-Fletcher in a good partnership with captain McCleary and then a fine 59* by all-rounder Handscombe kept the rate at somewhere close to 6 an over and just about in the hunt for a possible but still improbable chase. And as it happened improbable it proved to be with wickets beginning to tumble. With dead-eye Dick Bennett picking up his 5-for ably assisted by his assistant Milo Wills who took 3 almost identical catches (plus one more slightly more spectacular catch for luck ). It still seemed almost possible as Handscombe was invited back to the crease (after retiring on reaching his fifty earlier on) that with a fair wind they might somehow get the 40 plus runs still needed with 5 overs to go. But Garratt and Bennett held their nerve - no IPL this game... Handscombe ran out of partners in the 33rd over and the Gipsies crossed the finishing line for a fairly comfortable victory in the end. Thanks to all and special mention to Al Hope who skippered (for the first time) on the pitch in true Gipsy style as I rested my gammy leg, pulling the strings of course from off the pitch and also doing a bit of umpiring (sorry about the run out Singhy...)
